bullet  General Notes:

Sarah Stubbs was born 31.1.1855 at Stockton Staffs and died at Granville, Stone on 2.2.1933 and was buried two days later at St Michaels Church Stone.

They married at St Pauls Forebridge on 30.4.1877

In a paper cutting, Sarah left estate gross £90,519 2s 8d with net personalty £83,993 19s 8d. She left an annuity of £1 per week to Alice Maud Mary Meakin and Samuel Gunn and Karl Veit; silver prize presented to her late husband for cattle in Newcastle to her son Arthur Stuart Johnson, the Address presented to her late husband in 1888 to son Ernest James Johnson and subject to a few specific bequests, the residue of ppty equally between her children or their issue.

Beryl said she disliked noisy grandchildren (difficult for Beryl), had Victorian attitudes 'Sit up straight!'.

Remarkably little was known by Doreen and Beryl about their grandparents Robert and Sarah. That they had a large family, nine sons and finally two daughters, meant that there had been a plethora of Johnson cousins, so many in fact that Beryl's family did not even attempt to keep up with them. There was no idea of grandparents' dates or even the maiden name of Sarah.

She was remembered as being very formidable and upright, the epitome of a Victorian matriarch.

Robert Johnson died quite young, aged about 58 as far as Doreen remembers.

After his death, Sarah moved to a smaller house - Henshall Hall, Congleton, and then later on she moved again to a much smaller house in Stone. When her son Stuart and his wife Marjorie moved into Henshall, apparently Sarah always criticized Marjorie for the things she did in the house.
