Sir William Fitzwilliam, being sent ambassador to William, Duke of Normandy, accompanied that prince to England as marshal of his army and for his valour at the battle of Hastings, the Conqueror presented him with the scarf from his own arm.

William married Adela Plantagenet, daughter of Hamelin Plantagenet and Isabel de Warenne.
