Abraham John Robarts BA JP DL 4
- Born: 15 Dec 1838, Roehampton, Surrey 4
- Marriage: Hon Edith Barrington on 17 Aug 1869 in Brackley, Northamptonshire
- Died: 24 Jan 1926, Lillingstone Dayrell, Buckinghamshire aged 87 4
General Notes:
In 1887, the Manor House estate (of 625 acres) was sold to Abraham Robarts (Reed 1999, 127; BRO D210.24), and by 1891, the Manor House is not listed in the census (PRO RG 12/1154/55-62). It appears to have been demolished, and currently, Lillingstone House is the main house in the village.
It is difficult to know why Edmund Marmaduke Dayrell decided to move out. No family documents survive to indicate the reason, which could have been financial, or emotional, or both. At all events, he no longer wanted to be at the ancestral home, preferring to reside by the sea, in Jersey.
Abraham Robarts was High Sheriff of Bucks in 1869 and a Captain in the Bucks Yeomanry.
He was a rower (he steered the Oxford eight in 1859 and 1860 in the boat race)and was on the committee of the National Regatta.
Joint master of the Grafton Hunt.
Obit The Times 26 Jan 1926
Mr Abraham John Robarts, of Tile House, Buckingham, died on Sunday after some few week's illness at the age of 87. He was the senior member of Robarts, Lubbock and Co, bankers. At one time he was joint master with Lord Southampton of the Grafton Hunt. During the last few years he was chairman of the Buckingham Divisional Petty Sessions. Though a staunch Conservative, he always strongly declined nomination as candidate for North Buckinghamshire, and also refused to take any part in county council business, but took a deep interest in local affairs and was a most generous supporter of local institutions. He married the younger daughter of the late Lord Barrington, of Westbury Manor, Buckingham; she died some years ago. He leaves two sons and four daughters. The funeral will be at Lillingstone Dayrell, near Buckingham, tomorrow.
