bullet  General Notes:

Edward Sackville, 4th Earl of Dorset KG (died 17 July 1652) was the son of Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset and the brother and heir of Richard Sackville, 3rd Earl of Dorset.

In 1613, Sackville fought a duel with Edward Bruce, 2nd Lord Kinloss, for the hand of Venetia Stanley, a granddaughter of Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby. They fought in Bergen-op-Zoom, Netherlands to avoid the wrath of James I. In the bloody affray that followed, Sackville was run through the body and lost a finger while attempting to disarm Kinloss, but ultimately dispatched his opponent with two thrusts to the chest. Though gravely wounded, Sackville survived, but Venetia Stanley ultimately married Sir Kenelm Digby.

Before he became Lord Chamberlain in 1642, Sackville served as Queen Henrietta Maria's Lord Chamberlain in the 1630s.

Sackville married Mary Curzon (1586-1645) of Croxall Hall, Derbyshire, who became the governess of Charles and James Stuart, both later Kings of England and Scotland. The Sackvilles had three children:

Mary (died 1632)
Richard Sackville, 5th Earl of Dorset (1622-1667)
·Hon. Edward Sackville (died 1646) 26
