John Stewart Earl of Buchan

  General Notes:

John succeeded to the Earldom of Buchan after the death of his uncle Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan (the Wolf of Badenoch). He fought in the Hundred Years' War and was victorious at the battle of Baugé, captured at the battle of Cravant and exchanged, appointed Constable of France in 1421 and killed at the battle of Verneuil.

Buchan was the first commander of the Garde du Corps the oldest unit of the French Household troops, formed from a company of Scottish Archers during the Hundred Years War they acted as the King's main bodyguard. ²⁶

John married Lady Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of Archibald Douglas 4th Earl of Douglas and Margaret Stewart.
