He was Warden of Dulwich College between 1845 and 1851. He was president of the Steel and Iron Institute. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Alleyne, of Four Hills, in the island of Barbados [G.B., 1769] on 14 February 1870

The Complete Baronetage

"Sir John (then Mr.) Alleyne had joined the Butterley Company in 1852 as its first manager at a time when highly professional and highly paid managers were being brought into industry.

He married one of the Fitzherberts and served as manager and chief engineer of the iron works for 28 years. He it was who designed the roof of St. Pancras Station and forged the girders at Butterley. He it was who carried out the project of a two-track railway bridge over the Maas at Dortrecht in Holland.... an English Engineer who was called over to Holland to bridge one of the mighty Dutch rivers. It was a tremendous undertaking."


The Times 22 Feb 1912:

Sir John Gay Newton Alleyne, Bt., whose death occurred yesterday at Falmouth, was born in the year 1820 and succeeded his father in the baronetcy, created in 1769, in the year 1870.

Sir John was educated at Harrow and Bonn. An engineer by profession, he was an original member of the Iron and Steel Institute, and was, indeed, the sole survivor of the first council formed under the presidency of the seventh Duke of Devonshire, in 1869. He was Vice President of the Institute during recent years. Sir John was also a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

After a short engagement at Barbados in the sugar industry he entered the service of the Butterley Iron Works, Derbyshire, for which he acted as manager and engineer for 28 years. During this period he was associated with many important railway contracts, including the buildingof the St Pancras Station of the Midland Railway. Sir John was also responsible for the design of a considerable amount of colliery plant, He took much interest in certain branches of iron and steel research, notably the applicatiion of the spectroscope to analysis, a subject upon which he contributed a paper to the Iron and Steel Institute, During his years of active service on the Council of that body he frequently took part in discussions at the meetings of the Institute. Sir John Alleyen became a Warden of Dulwich College, with which the family had close associations, in 1843.

He married Augusta Isabella, daughter of Sir Henry Fitz-Herbert, who died in 1910, and had two sons and three daughters. His eldest son, Reynold Henry Newton, was born in 1852 and married Susanna, third daughter of Mr John Meynell. He died in 1908, leaving two sons and four daughters. The eldest son, John Meynell, who was born in 1889 and is a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and is heir to the barontetcy.

The funeral takes place at Falmouth tomorrow at 11.
