Captain William Mellard, North Staffordshire Regiment, was the second and only surviving son of Mr and Mrs Joel Settle, of the Hill, Alsager. He was born on January 20, 1895, and before the war had just started in business with his father. He was educated at Elleray Park, Wallasey and Radley College, Oxford, and joined the 2/5th North Staffs Regiment on its formation in August 1914. He served with the battalion continuously in England, Ireland and France, attaining the rank of captain. He was taken prisoner on March 21, 1918, but when the armistice was signed he was unable to return home having contacted influenza. Pneumonia and pleurisy supervening, he died in hospital at Mainz, Germany, on Monday, December 23 last. His elder brother, Second Lieutenant Reginald William Settle, RAF, was killed flying over the German lines in July 1916.
