Portraits of the family
One picture portrays John Hendrie's 3 sons, one on a pony; the youngest, Alfred, must be the little boy on the pony. His eldest brother would be in a suit (Charles who was 6 years older than Alfred), and Robert only 2 years older than Alfred, I take to be the boy in the kilt on the right hand side of the photograph. I think the ages of the children help us to distinguish:* Charles B 1864 Robert 1868 Alfred 1870
The artist has not made much difference to the ages of the childrens* faces & so their clothes (eldest in "adult" knickerbocker suit, younger pair in matching highland costume) must help us decide.
I suppose the lady in the lace cap, is John Hendrie's mother Barbara Clydesdale, Mrs Charles Hendrie.
The moustachioed gentleman, I think, is John Hendrie himself, born 1829. He would probably have pictures painted of himself and wife, his parents and his children, or old Charles might have commissioned them.
I guess that the children were painted as they looked about 1880.
The frames of the pictures of John & Agnes match. (Agnes is pictured in matching jewels)
The frames of the pictures of Barbara & of the man I think is Charles her husband, a match. Are these 2 pictures older? They look to be the same style (same artist?) but the varnish looks more worn on them.
I do hope that the 4 girls were painted. (I have not checked Henrietta's birth cert, but presume "C" stands for Clydesdale.
I enclose maps of the Renfrew/Glasgow area (l") to show Scotstoun House & a map of mid Scotland to show Carron Iron works, Larbert, long the home of Scottish ironsmelting. You will also note that I have marked Cumbernauld village, Airdrie town, Glasgow & Scotstoun on this map to illustrate ancestral roots. 63
