It was the only race on which she placed an annual bet. Marjorie was ambitious for her children, entertaining them in to many tennis tournaments. She loved being part of the Cheshire county set.She was always well dressed, and loved enteraining, and often gave parties for her grandchildren. She was a very good bridge player. She once entered a national bridge competition run by the Daily Mail, which she won.
Andrew Meynell's notes:
Marjorie went to Cheltenham Ladies College and was sporting, being good at tennis and hockey. She passed this love of sport on to her children, particularly tennis.
There were two grasscourts at Henshall, and one hard court built on Marjorie's Grand National winnings. It was the only event on which she placed an annual bet. Doreen and Beryl played the most tennis together.
Reginald was keener on cricket and Beryl was made to bowl at him for hours at a time.
Marjorie was ambitious for her children, entering them into many tournaments, entertaining continuously at Henshall with tennis parties and mixed-age parties.
She loved being part of the Cheshire county set, was always well dressed and liked her family to be so too. She made a striking tall figure. When her grandchildren stayed with her during school holidays, one of the things she invariably did was to buy each one of us a new dress.
Marjorie was also a very good bridge player and for fun entered a national bridge competition run by the Daily Mail, which she won. She was also an excellent patient teacher of bridge.
Both she and Stuart were generous and hospitable, and Marjorie enjoyed running an efficient home. Apparently Marjorie 'went to pieces and was no help to Beryl' (quoting Doreen) when her son in law John Hobson died at the age of 55. She was asked about him on a shopping trip to Congelton, and just dissolved into tears. Perhaps it brought back memories of the loss of her two brothers not long after her son Reginald died. Stuart resolved not to go to the funeral, saying that he wanted no more distress, although Marjorie did go herself.
Marjorie married (Arthur)Stuart Johnson, son of Robert Lewis Johnson and Sarah Stubbs, on 21 Apr 1915 in St Mary's Church, Alsager.8 ((Arthur)Stuart Johnson was born on 3 Mar 1885 in Gayton, Staffordshire,4,9 died on 20 Sep 1970 in Henshall Hall, Congleton, Cheshire 8 and was buried in Astbury Church, Cheshire.)
